The most effective measures for improving road traffic safety

The most effective measures for improving road traffic safety

Ministry of Transport

In a survey conducted by the Ministry of Transport (MoT), which took place during the LAMPA conversation festival, regarding measures to be taken in the near future to improve road safety, 26% of respondents indicated increased control as the most effective measure, while 25% indicated the investigation of serious road accidents. Almost 800 festival visitors participated in the survey.

The visitors of the festival expressed their opinion on what they believe to be the most effective measures to be implemented in the near future that could improve road safety. The most effective measures, which received 207 (26%) and 195 (25%) votes of residents, respectively, are increased control (police control and the use of technical means) and the investigation of serious road accidents. At the same time, improvements in the training of new drivers (16%), equipping electric scooters with a sobriety test (14%) and safe driving consultations (14%) were also recognized as effective measures. The implementation of campaigns received the least support (5%).

In collaboration with traffic safety experts, festival visitors created their own set of measures that they believed could improve traffic safety and would reduce the number of people injured and killed in serious traffic accidents. Visitors also shared their vision of which method is more effective in changing driving habits – prevention (education and information) or punishment.

In discussions with the experts, the visitors most often indicated that intoxication tests for electric scooter riders would be the most effective measures to be implemented immediately. Another principle mentioned as a measure to be implemented in the medium term: the more often the violation, the greater the punishment. Teaching traffic rules at school was chosen as the most effective measure in the long term.

Festival visitors had the opportunity to try on “drunkenness glasses” and a “rollover car simulator”, which allowed them to get into situations and identify the risks posed by alcohol intoxication and improper use of seat belts.

The conversation festival LAMPA took place on June 20 and 21, and the participation of the MoT in the festival was provided with funding from the European Union. The MoT cooperation partners and experts were the association "Sustento", the association "Socintegra", State JSC "Road Traffic Safety Directorate" (CSDD), State Ltd "Road Transport Administration", Vivi, the JSC "Latvijas dzelzceļš", the JSC "Latvia State Radio and Television Centre".
