On September 27, everyone is invited to participate in the nationwide social action for the support of people with disabilities "A mismatched shoes day" - a day when, by putting on a different shoe on each foot, we symbolically express understanding and acceptance of fellow human beings with functional and mental disorders.
Why is this important?
In Latvian society, there is still a lack of understanding, a desire to ignore and prejudices, which not only prevent the opportunity for many people to live a full-fledged life, including getting an education and work, but also often limit the opportunities of their family members - sisters, brothers and parents - to live a full-fledged life. People with disabilities are often considered to be of low value, worthless. Prejudice and negative attitudes towards people with functional and mental disabilities also undermine their self-esteem and often contribute to self-isolation. A vicious circle is created that creates the illusion in the minds of many that this topic is small and insignificant. There are more than 200,000 people with disabilities in Latvia. It is important to realize that mental or functional disorders can happen to anyone and they are not the end of life.
The ability and courage to recognize and accept diversity is very important for the development of society and everyone's well-being. It is an important pillar of democracy and human rights, not only in Latvia, but on the scale of the European Union and the entire democratic world, because we are united and strong precisely in our diversity.
By participating in this campaign, everyone makes a significant contribution to creating an inclusive and empathetic environment where everyone can feel accepted and understood. It's a great way to show your support for diversity and concern for the well-being of all members of society.
How to participate?
Spend September 27 or part of it with a different shoe on each foot, show your support for the acceptance of people with disabilities in society by posting a photo or video on social networks and the hashtag #IekāpOtraKurpēs.
Together we can show that we are different, we are united and strong in our diversity. Together and with the opportunities provided by the European Union and its funds, we can make the environment and society more inclusive for all of us.
