EU-funded micro-mobility connection between Ķekava and Riga

EU-funded micro-mobility connection between Ķekava and Riga

Ministry of Transport

Along the Bauska highway at the border of Riga, construction works on roads as well as pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure continue, organized by Riga municipality and the state-owned company "Latvijas valsts ceļi" (LVC). The pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure being developed within these projects extends the already completed sections in Ķekava Municipality and will ensure a fully continuous micro-mobility connection between Ķekava and Riga.

Within Riga’s territory, infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists is currently being built from the Mūkusala roundabout to the city’s administrative border along the A7 road, with a total length of 4.2 km. The works are planned to be completed this year.

Meanwhile, along the Bauska highway (A7) at the border of Riga, LVC is overseeing the construction of a pedestrian and cyclist path and tunnel. This will connect the section under construction by Riga municipality with the already completed infrastructure along the Ķekava bypass and the municipal pedestrian and cyclist network in Ķekava Municipality. The works are scheduled for completion in the summer of 2026.

The construction of micro-mobility connection is co-financed by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), Component 1: Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability. As a precondition for receiving EU co-financing, the municipalities of Ķekava and Riga were required to establish a unified route connecting Riga with Ķekava and other local settlements. To meet this requirement, construction works are currently being carried out, organized by both Riga Municipality and LVC. The project has been identified as a priority for Ķekava Municipality in order to establish this regional connection. In the first stage of the project, in the section from Valdeķu street to Ziepniekkalna street, construction continues on the overpass at Ziepniekkalna street and over Mālu street, as well as on pedestrian tunnels at Līvciema and Padures streets. Construction of the Valdeķu street overpass over Čakstes gatve is also ongoing. In addition, pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure is being built along the section of Ozolciema street from Riga Ziepniekkalns Secondary School to Līvciema Street, as well as in most of the section from Līvciema Street to Mālu Street. Alongside the road structures, various engineering communications are also being installed.

In the second stage of the project, in the section from Vienības gatve to Valdeķu Street, construction continues on overpasses and retaining walls for the Vienības gatve overpass. A stormwater collector and engineering communications are also being built, along with road construction works.

The pedestrian and cycle tunnel under the Bauska highway towards Ķekava is planned to be built in autumn and traffic will be switched to this carriageway.Only two lanes will be possible over the newly built tunnel, and traffic will be organised in one lane in each direction. Meanwhile, construction of the second part of the tunnel will begin under the Riga-bound carriageway.
