Ministry of the Interior

The Information Centre of the Ministry of the Interior, in close cooperation with the State Border Guard and the State Provision Agency, successfully completed the European Union-funded project No. IC/RPVP/2023/6 in March of this year. The project focused on the modernization of the State Border Guard's eastern border radio relay data transmission network. The second phase of the project introduced significant changes at 57 network sites, substantially increasing the data channel capacity, which is crucial for the creation of the European Border Surveillance System's Latvian national common picture and for the effective control and surveillance of the state border.

As part of the modernization, the network was divided into separate security zones, and various data flows were directed to isolated sub-networks. This structural improvement significantly enhances network availability and increases its security level.

In addition to the data transmission network upgrades, the project also included the modernization of the eastern border's internal telephony network. The new system enables the connection of up to 1200 VoIP telephone devices, thereby integrating the eastern border's communication into the Ministry of the Interior's unified internal voice telephony network. During the project, the outdated network infrastructure was dismantled, and the modernized network was commissioned.

To ensure the effective management, maintenance, and administration of the new infrastructure, Information Centre of the Ministry of the Interior's experts were trained within the project framework.

The total eligible costs of the project amounted to EUR 2,289,562. Of this amount, EUR 1,717,171, or 75% of the funding, was provided by the European Union's Financial Instrument for Border Management and Visa Policy for the period 2021–2027, while national budget co-financing amounted to EUR 572,391, or 25% of the total costs. The project officially concluded on March 31, 2025.
