With EU support institutions of Latvia learn from Finland's experience in border management

Ministry of the Interior

The State Border Guard College continues to implement the European Union co-funded project, "Strengthening the Cooperation and Training Capacity of Border Security Agencies in Latvia for the Effective Implementation of European Integrated Border Management."

From September 1-5 of this year, a delegation of representatives from the State Border Guard College, State Border Guard, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, State Police College, State Police, and the Office of the Ombudsman visited the Republic of Finland to learn about best practices in integrated border management related to strategy, operations, and education.

During the visit, the delegation toured the Finnish Border Guard Headquarters in Helsinki, the Border and Coast Guard Academy in Imatra, the Border Guard Detachment of the Southeast Finland Border Guard Command in Imatra, and the Joutseno Reception Centre for Asylum Seekers. They gathered examples of Finland's best practices in integrated border management.

This type of EU support is particularly important as it allows Latvia to learn from the best practices of other member states, thereby strengthening both national and common European Union security. For Latvia, as a country on the EU's external border, this is critically important. Projects and cooperation of this kind demonstrate EU solidarity and a shared commitment to protecting its values and borders.
