Traffic safety on the national road network is improved every year by reconstructing roads as well as implementing individual traffic organization improvement projects. This year, it is planned to fully implement or start 11 such projects.
Total investment will exceed 13 million euros, of which 7.5 million euros will be co-financed by the European Union (EU).
To improve traffic safety, infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists is planned to be built at seven locations on the national road network this year. In four of these locations, the construction will be co-financed by the EU Cohesion Fund:
Between Valmiera and Mūrmuiža (V187) (km 3.7–10.4);
Between Jāņmuiža and Cēsis (P20) (km 24.9–28.2);
Between Daugavpils and Lociki (A13) (km 129.4–134.7);
Between Tukums and Milzkalne (V1446) (km 2.2–4.3);
Between Būriņi and Viesturciems (P97) (km 8.8–10.34).
This year, it is also planned to reconstruct two intersections: at the junction of the Vidzeme highway (A2) and the regional road P27 (Smiltene intersection), traffic improvement measures will be implemented, including the construction of lighting and the reconstruction of the exit from Riga towards Gulbene. Meanwhile, at the intersection of regional roads P8 and P4 in Suntaži, pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure will be improved, public transport stops will be upgraded, and the bridge over the Abze River will be rebuilt.
Construction will also begin this year on two multi-level crossings: near Brankas, under the Jelgava highway (A8), a tunnel will be built for motor vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists; and in the outskirts of Riga, in Krustkalni, a tunnel for pedestrians and cyclists will be constructed under the Bauska highway leading to Riga. Both crossings will be made possible with EU funding.
Tunnel construction in Krustkalni is scheduled to begin in 2025; drivers should expect traffic restrictions both this year and in 2026. The tunnel will allow pedestrians and cyclists to safely cross the road without disrupting the heavy traffic flow. As is known, the Bauska highway is one of the busiest roads, with traffic intensity ranging from 13,000 to 30,000 vehicles per day.
