Yesterday, April 10, the premiere of director Andrejs Ēķis' multi-part feature film The Mutinity (Dumpis) took place at the Splendid Palace cinema, bringing together the film's creative team, representatives of the film industry, supporters, and well-known public figures.
The multi-part film is a historical drama based on true events that took place in Riga in 1975—one man's fight against the ruling regime, which leads to a mutiny on the USSR armored ship Storozhevoy. Having lost faith in the leaders of the Soviet Union and the military structure, political commissar Valery Sablin, guided by his communist ideals, decides to stage a mutiny on the ship. Opposing corruption, permissiveness, and the humiliation of ordinary people, he starts a rebellion that turns into something much bigger than originally intended. The Soviet Union's leadership does everything it can to stop the mutiny and then cover up information about the rebellion.
This psychological thriller allows us to follow a person's struggle against an insurmountable power, vividly portraying the different characters and their values, which are subject to pressure from the ruling system, threatening both their lives and their continued existence. What happens to a person who decides to stand up against the ruling dictatorship, based on their conviction that the good of society should be placed above the welfare of the elite? A story about humanity and justice in the grip of a totalitarian regime and all-pervasive propaganda.
Director Andrejs Ēķis explains: “My goal was to reflect the special atmosphere that prevailed during the Soviet era – when the ruling ideology was false and deceitful, influencing people's minds, encouraging them to betray each other and speak untruths on a daily basis, regardless of their true thoughts. Today, Russia's totalitarian regime is no different from the Kremlin of the Soviet era, the army's morals have not changed, but perhaps only a few people still see the tragic discrepancy between ideological slogans and the deplorable reality. This is what we wanted to show in The Mutinity. Perhaps this story will encourage some rebels to act similarly in Russia today!”
Uldis Tatarčuks, CEO of Tet, says: “Cinema is a great way to educate the public about various important issues, including lesser-known pages of history. That is why we are proud to support and invest in films that reveal human values through exciting and true historical events. I believe that this story will encourage many viewers to think not only about history, but also about issues that are still relevant today, especially now that we cannot take peace and stability for granted.”
The creative core of the film consists of director Andrejs Ēķis, screenwriters Ivo Briedis, Nastja Nastyushkina, Vitālijs Dokalenko, and producers Dita Cimermane, Aija Ansone, and Vitālijs Dokalenko.
The main role of Valery Sablin is played by actor Dainis Grūbe. Cast: Elīna Hanzena, Andris Keišs, Inga Tropa, Egons Dombrovskis, Jēkabs Reinis, Agnese Budovska, Igors Čerņavskis, and others.
The multi-part film was produced by Cinevilla Films. The project is supported by the technology and entertainment company Tet and the National Film Centre (within the framework of the ERDF/REACT-EU project "Growth of Latvian film industry companies by promoting their professional performance" No. 13.1.4.0/22/I/001).
The first multi-episode film series will be available on the Tet TV+ entertainment platform from April 11. The historical events are presented in a seven-episode story, while the film will be shown in two parts in cinemas.
