State Border Guard begins implementing project on continuation of operation of State Border Guard liaison officers points in Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova and Azerbaijan.
The current migration instrumentalisation and hybrid threats, geopolitical instability affecting factors of stimulation and attraction of migration, geographical location as well as future border security risks, challenges and possible consequences require the activities of permanent liaison officers abroad in order to prepare in time for future threats to illegal migration and border security and to be able to prevent them in a timely manner. This has been evaluated and recognized by the European Union, granting Latvia funding for the operation of liaison officers' points abroad within the framework of the Border Management and Visa Instrument for the 2021-2027 planning period.
The State Border Guard will have the opportunity to send liaison officers to foreign countries in the scope of the project No. VRS/RPVP/2023/9 "Continued operation of the State Border Guard officers points in Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova and Azerbaijan”. Through the project, the State Border Guard will strengthen its capacity to organize flexible response measures and a progressive approach to integrated border management, in accordance with the requirements of the European Union, ensure preventive measures and monitoring, control of illegal migration. In addition, the State Border Guard will ensure the effective performance of its functions in combating cross-border crime by organizing and improving activities of liaison officers abroad: organization of training and meetings, support to the Republic of Latvia consular services abroad, etc.
The project will contribute to the implementation of the EU security strategy and safeguard fundamental rights and European values.

The total cost of the project is €636,000 (477 000 euros of EU funds, 159 000 euros of state budget funding).
