Roads safety days! The EU supports ROADPOL initiatives

Roads safety days! The EU supports ROADPOL initiatives

Ministry of the Interior

Starting tomorrow, September 16, and lasting until September 22, the annual "ROADPOL Safety Days" campaign, organized by the European Roads Policing Network (ROADPOL), will take place in European Union member states, including Latvia.

As part of this campaign, September 18 will be a "European Day Without a Road Death," with the goal of collectively ensuring no one is killed or seriously injured on European roads during this period.

In Latvia, up to September 15 of this year, a total of 12,115 road accidents have occurred, resulting in 83 fatalities and 2,630 injuries. In the same period last year, there were 74 fatalities and 2,828 injuries. A road accident can happen in an instant, so it is crucial to remember that each of us is responsible for our own and others' safety on the road. Whether you are a pedestrian, a cyclist, or a driver, you must follow traffic rules. Responsible behavior on the road can protect not only you but also those around you.

During the campaign, the State Police will be working to ensure traffic safety and supervise road users. In addition to daily traffic enforcement, special attention will be paid to the safety of vulnerable road users, including cyclists, e-scooter, and motorcycle riders. They will also be monitoring the use of seat belts and child seats, as well as checking for drivers operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol.

Last year, during this campaign, State Police officers in Latvia recorded approximately 3,300 administrative violations in traffic, while more than 12,000 violations were recorded using technical equipment. Sadly, during the week-long campaign last year, four people were killed in road accidents, and 816 accidents occurred, injuring 104 people.

The European Union financially supports the organization "ROADPOL - European Roads Policing Network" and its initiatives. Additionally, the "ROADPOL Safety Days" campaign is directly funded by the European Union. The goal of this campaign is to raise awareness about road safety issues and encourage people to behave more responsibly on the road.
