Representatives of cultural organizations will learn solutions for improving accessibility of cultural places in a lifelong learning education course

Ministry of Culture

On 2-3 December 2024, the Ministry of Culture in cooperation with the Latvian Academy of Culture will organise a seminar - lifelong learning education course on accessibility of culture for people with functional disabilities at the Riga Circus. The course aims to improve cultural organizations’ understanding of accessibility issues and promote the implementation of various solutions to improve the accessibility of cultural venues.

Ensuring cultural accessibility is an important cultural policy priority, considering the creation of an inclusive society and ensuring opportunities for full participation in cultural life for every resident of Latvia Alongside infrastructure improvements, other relatively simple solutions, such as clear, visible and unambiguous signage, markings, detailed space plans, and easy-to-find and easy-to-understand information available in advance of the event, are also essential to create a safe and comprehensible environment.

The lifelong learning education course is organized in collaboration with the Latvian People with Special Needs Cooperation Organization SUSTENTO, the Riga Society for the Visually Impaired and Blind “Redzi mani!”, the Latvian Union of the Deaf, the Easy Language Agency, and digital accessibility specialists who have extensive experience working with various target audiences with specific needs.

The seminar participants will be introduced to the most important conclusions and findings of the “Study on the Accessibility of Cultural Infrastructure and Services in Latvia” conducted by the Latvian Academy of Culture. The course participants will also be able to get acquainted with examples of good practice of cultural organizations that can help to create an inclusive cultural offer.

Representatives of cultural organizations can apply for free participation in the seminar by filling out the application form online until November 25 https://forms.gle/Lr6dVt7hAbNRyRJR7. The number of participants is limited, and applications will be approved in the order of application.

At the end of the seminar, participants will receive certificates from the Latvian Academy of Culture for completing the lifelong learning education course “Cultural Accessibility in Cultural Organizations” in the amount of 16 academic hours.

The lifelong learning education course is implemented with funding from the European Union (EU), through the Ministry of Culture. Accessibility solutions in cultural infrastructure and cultural heritage sites are a mandatory requirement for implementing EU funded projects.
