More than 100 teams from all over Latvia take part in the Great Euroquiz

The Ministry of Welfare

The Great Euroquiz, an online knowledge competition for upper secondary students, has concluded once again – now already a well-established tradition. Organised for the sixth year by the Ministry of Welfare, this year’s quiz brought together over 100 classes from general and vocational education institutions, covering 48 cities and towns across Latvia.

In the quiz, students tested and expanded their knowledge about the European Union (EU), its values, the field of social welfare, and the contribution of EU funds to promoting well-being and equality.

Winners of the competition:

  • Vidzeme – 11.d class of Ogre State Gymnasium

  • Latgale – 10.b class of Balvi State Gymnasium

  • Kurzeme – 10th grade of Engure Secondary School

  • Zemgale – 11.a class of Jelgava Secondary School No. 5

  • Sēlija – 11.a class of Ilūkste Rainis Secondary School

  • Rīga city – 10.b class of Rīga Zolitūde Gymnasium

The 10.b class of Rīga Zolitūde Gymnasium was named the most knowledgeable class overall in Latvia.

“Students participated in the quiz with great enthusiasm – the prize was a strong motivator, but even more important was the process itself. The information was valuable and broadened the students’ horizons, while the teamwork strengthened class unity. Quizzes like this should definitely continue!” said Olga Ķēniņa, a teacher at Rīga Zolitūde Gymnasium.

“There was a lot of useful information in the quiz questions – including topics that young people rarely think about in daily life. The class worked on the quiz with real interest, which encouraged collaboration. This kind of quiz absolutely deserves to continue,” added Mudīte Stepanova, teacher of the 10.b class at Balvi State Gymnasium. The school participated for the first time and won the Latgale regional title.

The most knowledgeable class in each Latvian region and the capital Rīga will receive funding for a team-building activity of their choice worth €500. In addition, the top-performing class in the country will receive an extra €500, covering a total of €1000 for a joint class activity.

The Great Euroquiz is an online game organised by the Ministry of Welfare, where students from grades 10–11 and 1st–2nd year students of vocational education institutions compete as a class team under the guidance of a teacher. All that’s needed to participate is a computer with an internet connection. The quiz has become a much-anticipated event for upper secondary students across Latvia – an opportunity to test their knowledge together with classmates in a fun, educational, and engaging atmosphere, fostering teamwork and competing for valuable prizes. This year’s quiz took place from May 6 to 19.
