Fighting human exploitation with EU support! Inter-institutional cooperation in detecting human trafficking is strengthened

Ministry of the Interior

On September 18 and 19 of this year, the Investigators' Training Centre hosted practical simulation exercises organized by the Ministry of the Interior and the State Labour Inspectorate focused on the detection of labour exploitation and human trafficking.

The event was attended by the State Police, the State Labour Inspectorate, the State Border Guard, the Riga Municipal Police, and the Ministry of the Interior. Their goal was to collectively strengthen inter-institutional cooperation and practical skills through various simulation exercises. The main objective was to promote effective information exchange and response to potential cases of human trafficking.

Over the two days, participants worked through realistic scenarios set in a café and on a construction site, which reflect current risks in Latvia. The event combined both table-top exercises and practical situation simulations, providing an opportunity to test and improve daily working methods.

This simulation was a significant step in strengthening the capacity of Latvian institutions and affirmed the state's commitment to actively countering human trafficking and labour exploitation.

The training took place within the framework of the EU co-funded project "Strengthening the Performance and Modernisation of Services of the State Labour Inspectorate."

EU funds allow for overcoming national budget limitations by investing directly in the knowledge and practical skills that are crucial in the fight against such serious crimes. This support guarantees that Latvian institutions can work in a coordinated manner, utilising the latest international practices to protect the most vulnerable members of society from exploitation and to create a safer and more inclusive environment. Thus, EU co-financing is not just funding - it is an investment in human security and the state's ability to effectively protect its people.
