EU support and the visit of the President of Latvia. Strengthening Latvia's eastern border

EU support and the visit of the President of Latvia. Strengthening Latvia's eastern border

Ministry of the Interior

Yesterday, on August 19, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs, together with the Chief of the State Border Guard, General Guntis Pujāts, made a significant visit to the country's eastern border. The main goal of this visit was to assess the progress and evaluate the work done to strengthen the security of the state border.

During the visit, they inspected and analyzed the construction of border security infrastructure, which includes both physical barriers and modern technologies. Special attention was paid to the deployment of counter-mobility material and technical equipment, which is vitally important for an effective response to any attempts to cross the border illegally. The construction of automated border infrastructure and the implementation of new technological solutions were also evaluated. These solutions allow for the more efficient and faster detection and prevention of potential threats, for example, by using drones and sensor systems.

The visit also included a meeting with representatives of the State Border Guard and the National Armed Forces. During the discussion, necessary changes to the legal framework were discussed to strengthen border defense and respond effectively to modern challenges, including hybrid threats.

EU financial support: a Significant contribution to security

Strengthening Latvia's border is not just an issue of national importance. It is also about protecting the external border of the European Union. In this context, it is extremely important that the European Union provides substantial financial support. EU funding is an instrument that allows for the implementation of modern technological solutions, the construction of new infrastructure, and the completion of large-scale works that would be difficult to accomplish with the national budget alone.

EU support not only provides the necessary resources but also demonstrates solidarity among member states, understanding that a common security issue is in the interest of all member states.

This kind of support allows Latvia to not only protect its own interests but also to effectively participate in strengthening the security system of the entire Europe, thereby creating a stable and secure future for both Latvia and the entire EU.
