On June 19, 2025, Riga hosted a meeting of the European Union's Home Affairs Funds 2021-2027 programming period monitoring committee. Representatives from the European Commission and non-governmental organizations discussed EU funds investments aimed at strengthening Latvia's internal security.
Overall, for the 2021-2027 period, Latvia has access to over €259 million to boost its internal security through EU Home Affairs funds, sourced from:
the Internal Security Fund - for information exchange, cross-border cooperation, and crime prevention and combatting.
the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund - for the asylum system, legal migration, integration, and returns;
the Instrument for Financial Support for Border Management and Visa Policy - for strengthening borders and implementing an effective, secure visa policy.
The interior sector also receives significant funding from the European Union's Recovery Fund and the European Regional Development Fund, underscoring the EU's multifaceted support.
"The European Union's Home Affairs funds are investments in our national security and in a safe and stable future for the people of Latvia. This support enables us to modernize technical equipment and information systems, enhance the qualifications of internal affairs personnel, and implement other activities, purposefully addressing contemporary security challenges," stated Kaspars Āboliņš, Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.
The European Union's Home Affairs Funds Monitoring Committee will continue its constructive work to ensure the targeted use of EU funds for strengthening Latvia's internal security.
