EU Fund Investment Allocation of Over €35 Million Approved for the Modernization of Schools in 18 Municipalities
An investment allocation of more than €35 million from European Union (EU) funds has been approved for the modernisation of schools in 18 municipalities, as per the order adopted today, June 17, by the Cabinet of Ministers.
The total planned and available funding amounts to €41,506,355, consisting of:
€35,280,401 from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)
€6,225,954 in co-financing from municipal budgets
This investment is directed to municipalities that have restructured their school networks according to the investment requirements, as well as to the Riga city municipality. The funds will support the development of a modern and comfortable general education environment and improve access to quality educational services. The goal is to modernise at least 20 schools across Latvia by December 31, 2028.
As part of the project pre-selection, applications were received from 22 municipalities. Funding was approved for 18, including those granted additional support for developing or improving inclusive education infrastructure in general education institutions:
Ādaži – €1,221,659
Alūksne – €525,281
Daugavpils – €4,040,224
Gulbene – €822,432
Jelgava (city) – €3,286,814
Jelgava (municipality) – €1,620,885
Liepāja – €3,514,943
Rīga – €5,000,000
Smiltene – €810,443
Jūrmala – €2,008,122 + €247,440
Ķekava – €1,665,929 + €247,440
Mārupe – €2,305,274 + €247,440
Olaine – €855,486 + €247,440
Salaspils – €993,529 + €247,440
Saulkrasti – €399,227 + €247,440
Sigulda – €1,894,057 + €247,440
Valka – €342,195 + €247,440
Ventspils – €1,746,939 + €247,440
In the second round of project pre-selection, more municipalities applied for support to promote inclusive education than originally planned. To ensure all 9 eligible municipalities could access additional funding, €1,286,192 was reallocated from the EU fund programme “Provision of educational institutions for the qualitative implementation of the improved general education content at the preschool level.”
Four municipalities—Cēsis, Kuldīga, Tukums, and Valmiera—were deemed ineligible during pre-selection.
For municipalities that did not meet eligibility criteria in time, the Ministry of Education plans to provide opportunities to support school infrastructure modernisation in future rounds of support.
One of the main goals of this investment is to strengthen the STEM learning environment – including subjects like science (grades 1–6), chemistry, biology, physics, design and technology, engineering, geography, and mathematics. With EU support, municipalities will also be able to construct, renovate, or rebuild school buildings and dormitories, upgrade sports infrastructure, purchase teaching equipment, and improve outdoor areas. Furthermore, investments will promote the development or enhancement of inclusive education infrastructure in general education institutions.
