On August 29, 2025, a ceremonial event marked the successful completion of the European Union co-funded project, "Installation of ABC Gates at Riga International Airport (Phase 2)."
Launched on April 1, 2024, the project aimed to improve the usability of automated border control (ABC) gates in the airport's departure sector, enhance the State Border Guard's ability to react effectively, and provide a modern approach to integrated border management.
As part of the project, 10 new ABC gates were installed and connected to the existing system, and two modern ABC gate surveillance workstations were provided. Additionally, passenger flow was improved by moving some of the gates and workstations to the arrivals terminal. This means that travelers will now have access to a faster, more convenient, and more secure border control process.
This project is significant not only for Latvia but for the entire European Union. It is an investment in implementing Europe's security strategy, strengthening border management, and ensuring the protection of fundamental rights and EU values. The project was implemented by the State Border Guard under the Financial Support Instrument for Border Management and Visa Policy 2021–2027, with the Ministry of the Interior serving as the managing authority in Latvia.
Latvia expresses its immense gratitude to the European Union for its crucial financial support. This investment has been instrumental in modernizing our border infrastructure and strengthening our shared security. The EU’s commitment to funding projects like this demonstrates a strong, unified approach to protecting our external borders and ensuring the safety and convenience of all travelers. We are thankful for this partnership and the collective effort to uphold the values and security of the entire European Union.
