Entrance to LNMH Riga Castle from Daugava gāte

During the construction of the exhibition, the LNMH at Riga Castle will be partially closed to visitors

Ministry of Culture

On September 15, the construction of the new exhibition “Streaming Time” will begin at the Latvian National Museum of History in Riga Castle, therefore the museum will limit its public activities until the spring of 2026. It will be closed to visitors, but groups of students organized by schools will have the opportunity to participate in classes “Explorer’s Attic” to learn about the history of Latvia, upon prior registration. The museum will also continue to organize separate events in some rooms of the castle that are not related to the installation of the exhibition.

You can get a feel for the museum spaces in Riga Castle by taking a newly created 360° virtual tour. It captures the architecture of the reconstructed spaces of the castle before the construction of the exhibitions, allowing researchers and interested parties to view them even after the museum stands and showcases have been placed. You can also use the LNMH audio guide, which is available in 6 languages from anywhere in the world using an internet connection.

Until September 15, the museum will still accept individual visitors, and there will also be excursions and classes led by specialists.

The exhibition “Streaming Time” will be the first of the newly created exhibitions of the LNMH after returning to its historical home in the Riga Castle. It will be located on an area of 620 square meters and will tell the story of the land of Latvia and its inhabitants throughout history from ancient times to the present day. The flow of time in the exhibition is viewed through a person’s belonging to a certain group of people (citizens, ethnic, religious communities, social class, citizens of the state, etc.), emphasizing the “we” characteristic of the nine eras and the mutual cooperation of various groups.

Next year, the museum premises at Riga Castle will also host the exhibition “Livonian Castles”, which will eventually be supplemented by the exhibitions “History of the Riga Castle” and “Sacral Art”.

The companies SOLAVI and  AD PRODUCTION, which won the tender for the production and installation of the new exhibition “Streaming the Time”, have committed to completing the work within 31 weeks of commencement.

The estimated total cost of the construction and furnishing of “Streaming Time” is EUR 1,276,672, of which EUR 1,085,171 is European Union funding. The European Union Funds Programme implemented by the Ministry of Culture provides an opportunity to invest in the preservation, improvement and creation of a new offer for the public of the unique cultural and historical heritage of this and 4 other objects in the historical centre of Riga.

LNMH hopes that the public will understand the need for temporary restrictions at Riga Castle in the fall and winter, and in the spring, it will invite visitors to explore and appreciate the new exhibition there—Latvian history from a 21st-century perspective. At the same time, the museum invites you to explore Latvian history at other LNMH locations: Dauderi and Popular Front Museum, or digitally.
