During Civil Protection Week, on September 17, 2025, the Ministry of the Interior hosted a seminar titled "Involvement of Non-Governmental Organizations in Civil Protection and Strengthening Societal Resilience." The event was organized by the Civil Protection Working Group of the Latvian Civic Alliance in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior, the State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Latvian Platform for Development Cooperation – LAPAS.
Opening the seminar, the Minister of the Interior, Rihards Kozlovskis, emphasized: "Civil protection will be truly effective only if the entire society is involved. I am pleased with the very constructive and successful cooperation with Latvia's NGO sector, which is the closest cooperation partner for the Ministry of the Interior and our services. They help implement the instruments created at the state level for effective civil protection. Today's seminar on the involvement of NGOs in civil protection marks an already regular format of practical cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior and its services. I am glad that it is so well attended and I thank everyone for their personal involvement in strengthening our country's internal security."
To ensure an effective and modern civil protection system capable of responding to various crises, Latvia requires significant financial support. The European Union's support for strengthening civil protection in Latvia is indispensable. This support allows for the funding of modern equipment, such as fire fighting vehicles and specialized rescue techniques, as well as the development of early warning systems. Furthermore, European Union support helps provide training and exercises for representatives of both state institutions and non-governmental organizations, fostering cross-border cooperation and knowledge exchange. This significantly strengthens the resilience of Latvia and the entire European Union against crises and disasters.
