With EU support, the European Migration Network expands the Asylum and Migration Glossary

Ministry of the Interior

On September 25, 2025, a meeting of the European Migration Network (EMN) Latvian National Contact Point took place in Rīga to discuss the expansion of the Asylum and Migration Glossary. Experts from 25 European countries participated in the meeting, both in person and online. The inclusion of new terms from the Pact on Migration and Asylum regulations was discussed.

The Asylum and Migration Glossary was developed within the framework of the EMN. It is an EU-wide, multi-sectoral terminology glossary translated into 27 languages. The latest version includes more than 540 terms. This glossary is a significant tool as it ensures a common understanding of terms and concepts for all involved parties—policymakers, legislators, researchers, the media, and anyone interested in the topic of migration.

The Glossary features carefully developed methodology, clearly indicated sources, and includes synonyms and related terms. It is easily accessible both on the EMN website (https://home-affairs.ec.europa.eu/networks/european-migration-network-emn/emn-asylum-and-migration-glossary_en) and via the 'EMN Glossary' app for IOS and Google Store users.

The EMN Latvian National Contact Point prepares reports on the field of migration and asylum in Latvia, including updates on policy and statistics. The Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs is the Latvian National Contact Point of the EMN, responsible for preparing reports on the state of migration and asylum in Latvia, including policy developments and statistical data. The EMN prepares research papers on specific issues related to migration and asylum, and it compiles and updates information within the EMN information exchange system.

The activities of the EMN, including the functions carried out by its Latvian National Contact Point (Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs), are funded by the European Union. The EMN is an initiative of the European Commission that continually receives funding from the EU budget.

We thank the EU for the support and funding for the EMN's activities, which enables this important cooperation and the development of these tools.
