16,09 million EU Funding to Improve State City Connectivity with the European Transport Network

Ministry of Transport

On August 19, the Cabinet of Ministers (CM) approved the implementation rules prepared by the Ministry of Transport for the European Union Cohesion Policy Programme 2021–2027, Specific Objective 3.1.1 “To develop sustainable, climate-resilient, intelligent, safe and multimodal TEN-T infrastructure,” Measure 3.1.1.5 “Development of main streets and existing routes of nationally significant centres.”

The total available funding amounts to EUR 18.93 million, including EUR 16.09 million from the Cohesion Fund and EUR 2.84 million in national co-financing (municipal funding). By the end of 2029, it is planned to construct or modernize 5.8 km of roads within the European Transport Network (TEN-T).

Continuing the investments made in the 2014-2020 EU funds planning period to improve the connectivity of development centres of national importance with TEN-T, the priority of investment in the 2021-2027 EU funds planning period is focused on the development of the transport infrastructure of centres of national importance (state cities – Jelgava, Jēkabpils, Jūrmala, Liepāja and Ventspils), which are part of the continuation of the TEN-T core network or general network routes in the territories of state cities and contribute to the achievement of the policy target indicator.

The projects will involve the reconstruction of streets, the construction of sidewalks and bike paths, the reconstruction of lighting, as well as the reconstruction of intersections into roundabouts, thus significantly improving the quality of transport infrastructure, as well as the safety of road users, environmental accessibility and safe micromobility.
