The Ministry of Education and Science Invites You to the Educational Event “EU in My School” in Liepāja

Izglītības un zinātnes ministrija

The Ministry of Education and Science invites teachers and career counsellors to register their students for the educational event “Europe in My School”, which will take place on October 17, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM at RTU Liepāja. The aim of the event is to introduce young people to EU co-funded projects implemented in Liepāja, promote understanding of how these investments contribute to urban development, highlight the importance of careers in science, and offer insight into educational and career opportunities both in Liepāja and across the European Union.

The event will be opened by representatives from the Structural Funds Department of the Ministry of Education and Science (MoES), the Liepāja Education Department, the European Commission Representation in Latvia, and the leadership of the Liepāja City Council, emphasizing the importance of the event on both regional and national levels. The event will be hosted by Nansija Garkalne, a content creator well-known among young audiences, who will ensure a dynamic and fun atmosphere. The event is intended for young people aged 14 to 19.

At the heart of “Europe in My School” will be the urban orienteering game “Roadgames,” with approximately 200 students from schools in Liepāja and the Kurzeme region taking part. The day will begin with an exciting walk through the streets of the city, during which participants will use a digital game platform to discover projects implemented with EU funding, as well as well-known and lesser-known urban locations.

This dynamic activity will help young people understand how investments from EU funds contribute to urban development, strengthen the business environment, and create new opportunities for education and careers. It will be an educational and interactive experience that combines learning with adventure. After the game, participants will return to RTU Liepāja, where in an informal setting, they will be able to share their experiences, enjoy a tasty lunch, explore the EU Funds Travelling Gallery on investments in education, receive individual career consultations, and participate in the Career Festival.

At the Career Festival, young people will have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of activities. The “Science Bubble” initiative by the Latvian Science Council will present science as a hands-on experience, where young participants can meet early-career Latvian researchers currently implementing their scientific ideas through the “Postdoctoral Research Projects.” Participants will also be welcomed by the MoES science communication platform researchLatvia, which will host a quiz, giving young people a chance to test their knowledge in a fun and educational way, encouraging them to think critically and become “science detectives.”

Meanwhile, at the “Europe for Youth” stand, the European Commission Representation in Latvia, the European Parliament Liaison Office, and the EUROPE DIRECT Centre in Kuldīga will offer interactive activities aimed at raising awareness of EU values and opportunities for young people. At the stand, young people will be invited to share their visions for the future of Europe through the activity “Charge Europe with Your Ideas!”, as well as take part in the workshop “Museum of European Things,” where they will create a personal exhibition from everyday items with symbolic meaning. There will be an opportunity to spin the EU Wheel of Fortune, meet volunteers from the mesesamkopa.eu community, learn about the European Commission’s current priorities, and participate in the activity “My Voice in Europe,” which will help them better understand democratic processes and the functioning of the European Parliament. All activities are designed to inspire thought, exploration, and encourage young people to be active members of society.

In addition to youth activities, the European Commission Representation in Latvia will host a special session for teachers and career counsellors at the event venue from 11:30 to 13:30 — an educational workshop titled “European Union Discovery Moments and Practical Ideas for Strengthening Democracy.” The session will cover topics such as key facts about the EU, its priorities, democracy as a fundamental EU value, the culture of democracy in schools, and teaching materials for promoting civic values and democratic education in the classroom.

To conclude the event, young participants will listen to inspiring personal stories about career and educational journeys in science and entrepreneurship, gaining motivation for their own future choices. The event will end with an awards ceremony for the orienteering game — the most successful teams will receive symbolic prizes from the event’s partners.

The event is organised by the Ministry of Education and Science, as the managing authority for EU funds in education and science, in cooperation with the European Commission's Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO), the Liepāja City Municipality, RTU Liepāja, and the European Commission Representation in Latvia.
