Supported by EU funding, the development of Latvia's automated external border surveillance infrastructure continues to advance rapidly

Ministry of the Interior

The EU co-funded project "Automated Border Surveillance Infrastructure" continues its rapid development, strengthening Latvia's ability to effectively monitor and protect the European Union's external border.

In the 3rd quarter of 2025, work progressed according to plan, with significant achievements made along both the Latvia–Belarus and Latvia–Russia border sections.

Along the Latvia–Belarus border, construction work is actively continuing along more than one hundred kilometers. Designing has already been completed, and modern technologies have been introduced, which will ensure effective border surveillance and rapid response to potential situations in the future.

Simultaneously, work is also underway in several phases on the Latvia–Russia border section: the design phase is complete, construction continues, and the next stages will commence shortly. This confirms the project's focused progress towards a modern and technologically advanced border surveillance system.

A public consultation on the renovation of observation and communication towers was organized in the 3rd quarter of 2025, demonstrating the project's transparency and public involvement, which ensures high-quality decision-making in the subsequent implementation stages.

The project's significance is also highlighted by visits from high-ranking state officials to the external border sections, underscoring the importance of effectively utilizing EU fund support to create a sustainable and secure infrastructure that strengthens our national security and the daily lives of border area residents.

The project is being implemented by the State Border Guard in cooperation with the State Joint Stock Company "Latvian State Radio and Television Centre" and the State Provision Agency, within the framework of the Border Management and Visa Instrument, for which the Ministry of the Interior is the managing authority in Latvia.

It is commendable that the EU provides such significant financial support for this ambitious project! This not only substantially strengthens the security of the Latvian state but also the security of the entire EU external border, demonstrating shared responsibility and solidarity.
