Public survey highlights priority measures for improving road safety

Ministry of Transport

In 2025, the Ministry of Transport (MoT) invited visitors at the festivals LAMPA, ARTIŠOKS, and KOPUMS, as well as during the European Mobility Week event “Car-Free Day” in Liepāja, to take part in a survey and share their views on the most important upcoming measures for improving road safety. The survey attracted wide participation – in total, 1,280 people took part, demonstrating that people care deeply about safety on the roads.

“We are pleased with the involvement of residents in expressing their views on the measures to be implemented in the near future to improve road safety. A safe road environment and the shared responsibility of every road user is our common concern – both for transport sector experts and policymakers, as well as for residents. The survey confirms that road safety issues are just as important for the public as they are for transport professionals,” emphasized Tālivaldis Vectirāns, Director of the Road Infrastructure Department at the Ministry of Transport.

The survey results show that the greatest support was given to measures aimed at investigating serious road traffic accidents. 23.3% of respondents stressed the need for in-depth analysis of serious accidents to draw conclusions and introduce effective safety improvements. Important for the public is also increased enforcement on the roads. 22.5% of respondents consider strengthening police work and using technical equipment as one of the most effective ways to reduce violations and improve road safety.

According to 18% of respondents, one of the key measures to enhance road safety is the improvement of young drivers’ training. Participants noted that high-quality preparation and strengthening of practical driving skills are essential to reduce accident risks in the future.

The responsibility of micromobility users is also gaining more attention in society. Therefore, 14.2% of respondents supported the idea of equipping shared e-scooters with sobriety tests, identifying it as an important safety solution.

Similarly, 14.6% of participants highlighted the importance of safe driving consultations, noting that practical advice and educational initiatives can help improve drivers’ habits and awareness of safe road use in the long term.

Meanwhile, 7.3% of respondents believe that road safety can be improved through information campaigns, although this measure received the least support compared to others.

At the same time, the active and balanced dialogue between experts and participants of the events demonstrated that it is possible to influence road users’ attitudes towards essential aspects of traffic, such as compliance with speed limits.

The MoT’s survey and participation in festivals with the educational activity program “Sustainable Mobility Stop” form a set of initiatives where transport and traffic experts meet with citizens to jointly discuss safer, more convenient, and greener transport systems and changes in mobility habits, thus bringing Latvia closer to the safest countries in the European Union. The Ministry’s participation in these events is supported by European Union funds.
