Latvia and European Commission - joint focus on border security and the new EU Migration and Asylum Pact

Ministry of the Interior

Security on the European Union (EU) external border is a constant priority, the implementation of which relies on close cooperation and targeted financial support.

Today, Kaspars Āboliņš, Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior, met with Henrik Nielsen, representative of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs, to discuss the current situation and operational challenges on the Latvian and EU external border.

The discussion focused on the implementation of the EU Migration and Asylum Pact. Kaspars Āboliņš emphasized that the practical application of the new regulations must be sustainable and flexible, taking full account of Latvia’s unique geographical position and the experience gained while operating on the EU's external border under conditions of hybrid threats.

During the meeting, the significant impact of the financial support provided by the European Commission was highlighted. Thanks to EU fund investments, Latvia is able to effectively strengthen external border surveillance by developing "smart" infrastructure and implementing state-of-the-art technologies, which form the foundation for the security of the entire Schengen Area.

We express our appreciation to the European Commission for its constructive partnership and solidarity. Joint investments in border security are a fundamental step toward a stronger and safer future for Europe.

Regular and direct dialogue with representatives of the European Commission is fundamentally important to ensure a unified understanding of the situation on the EU's external border and its impact on the security of the entire community. In this context, EU funding is not merely an additional resource—it is a strategic cornerstone that enables Latvia to implement ambitious and technologically advanced border modernization. Such solidarity in investment is crucial, allowing Latvia, as a frontline state, to guarantee a consistently high level of protection that serves as a collective "Safety Shield" for all of Europe.
