EU support strengthens Latvia's security! Construction of the automated border surveillance system achieves significant progress

Ministry of the Interior

By the end of 2025, significant progress has been achieved in the project "Automated Border Surveillance Infrastructure," purposefully strengthening the technological security of Latvia's eastern border.

Throughout the year, work has proceeded according to schedule on both the Latvian–Belarusian and Latvian–Russian borders:

  • Engineering design has been completed;

  • Utility networks have been actively constructed and video surveillance, along with other technological solutions, have been installed;

  • Implementation of surveillance systems has commenced.

At the same time, construction momentum has increased for the subsequent phases of the project. This infrastructure significantly improves border surveillance efficiency, strengthens response capabilities, and provides a major contribution to the protection of the European Union's external border.

General Guntis Pujāts, Chief of the State Border Guard, emphasizes: "The construction of a 'smart border' means not only border guarding but also the ability to timely detect, respond to, and prevent threats."

In the coming year, work will continue with steady intensity, focusing on completing the infrastructure construction, as well as system implementation, testing, and commissioning.

Project details: the project is implemented by the State Border Guard in cooperation with the SJSC "Latvia State Radio and Television Centre" and the Provision State Agency. It is carried out within the framework of the Financial Support Instrument for Border Management and Visa Policy, for which the Ministry of the Interior is the Managing Authority in Latvia.

The project is co-funded by the European Union.
