Last week, on November 27 and 28, the seminar “Information Technologies in Investigative Work” was held at the State Police College's Investigator Training Centre, where 45 representatives from various law enforcement agencies enhanced their digital skills and cybersecurity awareness in investigations.
The goal of the seminar was to help officials safely and responsibly use modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, in investigative work from a practical, legal, and ethical perspective. As emphasised by Dmitrijs Homenko, Director of the State Police College: "Artificial intelligence has significant potential if its capabilities are used correctly and appropriately in investigations."
During the two days:
Experts provided insight into current cybersecurity issues and threats.
CERT.LV led an interactive game, “Find the Hacker.”
Researchers from the University of Latvia explained the legal and ethical aspects of AI and practically demonstrated the use of open-source language models in processing speech and text data – solutions that participants will be able to apply in their daily work.
The seminar was attended by representatives from the structural units of the State Police and the State Police College, as well as from KNAB (Anti-corruption Agency of Latvia), the Internal Security Bureau, the State Border Guard, and the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Latvia. At the conclusion of the seminar, participants agreed on the next steps for strengthening digital skills within law enforcement agencies.
The State Police College thanks the seminar participants for their active involvement and valuable discussions, as well as the experts from CERT.LV, the researcher and lecturer from the University of Latvia Faculty of Law, Dr. iur. Irēna Barkāne, and the Associate Professor of the Faculty of Computing and Head of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science, Normunds Grūzītis, for their professional contribution. Such inter-institutional cooperation significantly raises the digital skills of officials and strengthens the country's internal security.
The seminar was implemented within the framework of Project No. VP/IDF/2024/5 “Strengthening the State Police's Response Mobility and Counter-Terrorism Capabilities by Establishing a Practical Training Centre,” co-financed by the European Union Internal Security Fund.
