With financial support from the European Union, the technological platform of the Biometric Data Processing System has been adapted to the unified biometric data quality processing standards of the European Union's IT systems.

On July 1, 2024, the Information Centre of the Ministry of the Interior began the implementation of the EU co-funded project No. IC/RPVP/2024/8 "BDAS Modernisation Phase 2."

As part of the project, a set of measures was carried out to ensure the integration of the unified biometric data quality assessment tools, supplied by the European Union Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (eu-LISA), into the technological platform of the Biometric Data Processing System.

The project involved the research, development, testing, and implementation of solutions for the unified biometric data quality assessment tool. This was done to ensure that the national IT solution can acquire and process biometric data that meets the standards set by the European Union's IT systems.

The project was implemented within the framework of the Financial Support Instrument for Border Management and Visa Policy for the 2021-2027 period, for which the managing authority in Latvia is the Ministry of the Interior.

The total project cost was 500,000 euros (EU funding - 375,000 euros, state budget funding - 125,000 euros).

The project concluded on July 31, 2025.

The financial support from the European Union allows us to modernise systems that are vitally important for our security and cooperation with other European countries. Thanks to this funding, Latvia's biometric data system is now compatible with unified EU standards. This means that our citizens' data is secure and processed according to the highest standards, which is essential for ensuring an effective fight against crime, promoting safe travel, and strengthening our internal security. This project is a great example of how European Union funds are used to create concrete and tangible benefits.
