The Latvian National History Museum’s exhibitions and children’s activity room in the Riga Castle

Ministry of Culture

With funds from the European Regional Development Fund secured by the Ministry of Culture, the Latvian National History Museum will soon open new exhibitions in the restored part of Riga Castle.

The exhibitions will be available in the second half of next year, but in the meantime, everyone is welcome to explore the restored part of Riga Castle.

Riga’s historic centre, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, is gaining another attraction for both visitors and residents to enjoy. The Latvian National History Museum plans to create two exhibitions as part of the project: “Livonian Castles" in the vaulted cellars and "Streaming Time" on the fourth floor, which will provide an overview of Latvian history. The children’s activity rooms in the attic of the castle provide another option for the wider public.

The exhibition "Livonian Castles" in the basement will explore the history of medieval castles, their role in Livonian society and daily life within these structures. It will feature artifacts from the Latvian National Museum of History, collections from various medieval castles in Latvia, as well as interactive elements and multimedia displays.

The exhibition "Streaming Time" on the fourth floor will narrate the history of Latvia from the Stone Age to the present day, highlighting the various forms of community belonging throughout the ages, beginning with the people of the hillforts and the warriors.

This journey will trace the evolution from church and city to citizenship culminating in a modern society that identifies as part of Europe and embraces shared values that were denied during the Soviet occupation.

The children’s activity room in the attic will offer an interactive experience designed for older school-age audiences, who can independently research historical facts, events and personalities, as well as younger children who will learn through collaborative activities.
