Ministry of the Interior

On August 29, 2025, a ceremonial event marked the conclusion of the European Union co-funded project, "Installation of ABC Gates at Riga International Airport (Phase 2)."

Launched on April 1, 2024, the project aimed to improve the usability of automated border control (ABC) gates in the airport's departure sector, strengthen the State Border Guard's ability to react effectively, and provide an advanced approach to integrated border management. As part of the project, 10 new ABC gates were installed and connected to the existing system, and two modern ABC gate surveillance workstations were provided. Passenger flow was also improved by moving some gates and workstations to the arrivals terminal. This means that travelers will now have access to a faster, more convenient, and more secure border control process.

This project is significant not only for Latvia but for the entire European Union. It is an investment in the implementation of Europe's security strategy, strengthening border management and ensuring the protection of fundamental rights and EU values.

During the event, the new 10 ABC gates were officially opened and the project was concluded with a symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony. The ceremony was attended by Brigadier General Juris Martukāns, Deputy Chief of the State Border Guard (Chief of the Main Directorate); Santa Sproģe-Rimša, Director of the Foreign Investment Development and Supervision Department at the Ministry of the Interior; and Laila Odiņa, Chairperson of the Board of Riga Airport.

Gratitude was expressed to the Ministry of the Interior, the European Commission, the State Border Guard, Riga Airport, and all partners and colleagues who contributed their work and knowledge to the implementation of this project. The project was carried out under the Financial Support Instrument for Border Management and Visa Policy 2021-2027, with the Ministry of the Interior serving as the managing authority in Latvia.

Latvia expresses its profound gratitude to the European Union for its crucial financial support. This EU funding is absolutely invaluable for modernizing our border infrastructure and strengthening our collective security. The European Union's support for such projects is more than just a financial investment; it demonstrates a strong, unified approach to protecting external borders and ensuring the safety and convenience of all travelers. We highly value this partnership and the collective effort, which are vital for defending the values and security of the entire European Union.
