Station 2.0: how mobility hubs will change travel habits in Latvia

Ministry of Transport

For trains and public transport in general to become an everyday travel choice, we need to create a convenient, safe, and well-designed transfer environment – Station 2.0 or mobility hubs. These are locations where trains, buses, private cars, and micromobility meet in one place, offering parking for private cars, electric charging options, and full accessibility.

Within the framework of the European Union Cohesion Policy Programme 2021–2027, nearly €89 million in funding is available to municipalities for mobility hubs, of which more than €75 million is provided by the European Regional Development Fund.

By the end of 2029, it is planned to establish 20 mobility hubs across Latvia, promoting mobility for residents throughout the country. In the first round of project selection, funding was granted to nine projects – in Riga and Cēsis – while the next selection rounds are planned soon, with more than €63 million available to municipalities for the development of mobility hubs.

In this story which takes place at one of the mobility hubs, Kozmens talks with transport expert Viesturs Krūmiņliepa and some young people to find out what mobility hubs are, how they are planned to develop, and what benefits they will bring to the residents. Meanwhile, young persons Endija and Nauris share their expectations for mobility hubs and the modes of transport they would most often use.
