With European Union funding, the greening reform of the public transport system in Riga and the surrounding metropolitan area is being implemented. Its goal is to reduce the negative impact of transport on the capital’s environmental quality and to develop integrated public transport services tailored to the needs of residents.
Modern infrastructure is being built for the convenience of citizens and the development of sustainable mobility, helping to reduce both harmful emissions and noise levels while ensuring greater comfort for the passengers. Within the framework of the project co-financed by the Cohesion Fund, Rīgas satiksme has purchased modern electric buses that transport Riga residents and visitors every day. In addition, with the Cohesion Fund co-financing, tram lines No. 7 and No. 5 are being adapted for low-floor trams.
The year 2025 can be marked as historic – with the support of the RRF, the extension of the tram line No. 7 to Višķu Street is under construction. This symbolizes the beginning of a new stage in the development of public transport in Riga, as the last time a new tram line was built in the city was more than 40 years ago.
In the story “Modern Public Transport – Greener Travel!” Kozmens sets out to explore the city’s public transport and finds himself in various interesting places. One of them is Višķu Street, where the first tram line extension in over 40 years is being built. Another is the Rīgas satiksme bus depot, where the Head of the Public Relations Department Baiba Bartaševiča-Feldmane presents the public transport greening strategy. Along the way, Kozmens meets two young people – Laura and Justs and invites them to share which improvements in public transport they value the most.
