Working visit of the Chief of the State Border Guard to Moldova held with EU funds support

From July 21 to 23 this year, the Chief of the State Border Guard, General Guntis Pujāts, paid a working visit to Moldova, where a quadrilateral meeting of the heads of border guard authorities of Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, and Ukraine took place.

During the meeting, a Joint Declaration (Latvia-Lithuania-Moldova-Ukraine) was signed on cooperation and support for the integration process of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine into the European Union.

As part of the visit, the delegations visited the Palanca and Costești border crossing points, where they were briefed on their tasks and operations, the current situation at the state border, and border infrastructure. They also visited an exhibition of vehicles and equipment, and attended a tactical task and boat demonstration.

At the end of the meeting, representatives of the Moldovan Border Police expressed appreciation for the contribution and support provided by the State Border Guard to the Moldovan Border Police. General Guntis Pujāts, Chief of the State Border Guard, was awarded the "For Cooperation" medals by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Moldova and the General Inspectorate of Border Police of the Republic of Moldova.

The visit was organized in accordance with the bilateral cooperation plan between the State Border Guard of the Republic of Latvia and the General Inspectorate of Border Police of the Republic of Moldova for 2026–2027, as well as Activity 6 of Project No. VRS/RPVP/2023/9 "Continuation of Operations of State Border Guard Liaison Officer Points in Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova, and Azerbaijan" under the Instrument for Financial Support for Border Management and Visa Policy 2021–2027.

The purpose of the liaison officer's activities is to strengthen control of the EU's external borders and to ensure effective management of migration flows in accordance with the requirements of the Schengen acquis. The State Border Guard liaison officer promotes cross-border cooperation and the expansion of professional contacts between law enforcement agencies of EU Member States and third countries, thereby reducing illegal cross-border activities and combating illegal migration to EU Member States.
