The security of Latvia's external land border remains one of the top priorities for both the Government and the Ministry of the Interior. This week, the Cabinet of Ministers was briefed on the latest construction progress.
🔹 Latvia–Belarus Border
The construction of the fence and other border protection elements has been fully completed along the entire planned length. Currently, the primary focus is on equipping the border with technological infrastructure managed by SJSC "Latvian State Radio and Television Center," which is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
🔹 Latvia–Russia Border
Fence construction has been completed in priority and complex sections. Work continues on constructing the remaining border protection elements and implementing technological infrastructure. The technological infrastructure along the Latvia–Russia border is scheduled for completion by the second quarter of 2027.
All constructed infrastructure is already being actively utilized to secure the state's external land border, mitigating hybrid warfare threats and providing real-time response capabilities against criminal offenses related to illegal border crossings.
Effective inter-institutional cooperation ensures the continuous progress of the project.
The transition to modern, technologically advanced, and sustainable border surveillance is significantly facilitated by international support—a substantial portion of the smart technology, sensor, and video surveillance infrastructure built along the EU's external border is co-funded by the European Union. The investment of EU funds makes a decisive contribution not only to strengthening Latvia's national security, but also to protecting the Schengen Area and the EU's common external border against irregular migration, smuggling, and hybrid threats.
