More modern border crossings with EU funds support! The EES system protects Latvia’s border

Ministry of the Interior

As of April 10, 2026, the Entry/Exit System (EES) has become fully operational across 29 European countries, introducing a state-of-the-art digital border control system. Since the EES began its operations in Latvia, 163,580 entries and exits have already been registered.

The benefits of the EES include:

  • Faster and smoother border crossings with reduced queues;

  • More effective and streamlined work for border guards;

  • Stronger security at the European Union's external borders;

  • Precise tracking of stay periods via an automated calculator.

The EES replaces traditional passport stamps with digital data registration and introduces the use of biometric data (fingerprints and facial images). The system applies to third-country nationals traveling for short-term stays (up to 90 days within any 180-day period).

The EES has been implemented in Latvia with EU co-financing.
