Latvia is making a vital contribution to strengthening international security and global stability

Ministry of the Interior

On March 3, the Cabinet of Ministers issued an order to extend the deployment of Lieutenant Colonel Raimonds Koptenkovs, Senior Inspector of the Missions Unit of the International Affairs Division (Cooperation and Development Bureau, Central Administrative Department of the State Police), to the European Union Mission in Armenia (EUMA) until September 27, 2026.

Latvia remains committed to supporting international efforts to enhance security and promote stability by participating in UN, EU, OSCE, and NATO missions and operations. Every year, up to 30 civilian experts are deployed to international missions. Officials from the State Police and the State Border Guard have been providing professional contributions within civilian missions for several years.

Currently, 23 Latvian civilian seconded experts are participating in international missions, including:

European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM Georgia) – 12;

European Union Advisory Mission in Ukraine (EUAM Ukraine) – 6;

European Union Mission in Armenia (EUMA) – 3;

European Union Partnership Mission in Moldova (EUPM Moldova) – 1;

European Union Advisory Mission in Iraq (EUAM Iraq) – 1.

The EU Mission in Armenia (EUMA) was launched by a decision of the EU Foreign Affairs Council on February 20, 2023. EUMA’s mandate is to observe and report on the situation on the ground, contribute to human security in conflict-affected areas, and, where possible, support confidence-building between Armenia and Azerbaijan. EUMA is an essential component of the EU's efforts to support peace and stability in the region.
