Latvia is a leader among the Baltic States in upgrading its civil protection infrastructure

Ministry of the Interior

The Ministry of the Interior, in cooperation with Latvian municipalities, has worked to successfully invest European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) financing within less than a year to upgrade shelters to the Category III shelter standard. Simultaneously, the Ministry has secured additional funding amounting to EUR 27,445,000 from the European Economic Area (EEA) Financial Mechanism.

Minister of the Interior, Rihards Kozlovskis:

"Latvia is a leader among the Baltic States in upgrading its civil protection infrastructure. In less than a year, we have secured nearly EUR 50 million in funding for the establishment of shelters in state and municipal buildings, which represents a highly significant investment in the safety of Latvia’s population. Alongside the EUR 22.2 million secured a year ago from ERDF funds, an agreement has been reached for an additional EUR 27.5 million for our civil protection infrastructure from European Economic Area funding. I would especially like to highlight that a large portion of these funds will be invested in improving the security situation in Latgale—in line with the government's overall priorities, the warning siren network will be modernized and expanded in all municipalities along Latvia's eastern border. Furthermore, these funds will support the continued upgrading of Category III shelters in all state and municipal buildings, as well as the purchase of electricity generators for hospitals and social care centers."
