Our sea’s new guardian! A story of how EU support builds a safer future

Our sea’s new guardian! A story of how EU support builds a safer future

Ministry of the Interior

Security is not just a word – it is action, vigilance, and cutting-edge technology. On January 16, 2026, amidst the winds of the Port of Liepāja and the solemn atmosphere of the "Great Amber" concert hall, a historic milestone was reached in a significant journey: the new patrol vessel “BĀRTA” officially joined the fleet of the State Border Guard. This is more than just a new ship; it is a symbol of the collective ability of Latvia and the entire European Union (EU) to safeguard our borders.

From Concept to Maiden Voyage!

The journey began in June 2024, when the Ministry of the Interior and the State Border Guard agreed on an ambitious goal – the acquisition of a state-of-the-art patrol vessel. In collaboration with the Estonian shipbuilders "Baltic Workboats" and following meticulous customization to meet the specific needs of the border guards, the vessel traveled from the Nasva shipyard to its new home in Liepāja. Following intensive training and rigorous testing, the ship was fully entrusted to the hands of Latvia’s guardians at the end of 2025.

More Than Just Border Control!

“BĀRTA” represents a technological leap forward. As noted by the Chief of the State Border Guard, General Guntis Pujāts, this vessel allows us to respond to security challenges professionally and, crucially, in a timely manner. It serves as our new eyes and ears in the Baltic Sea:

  • Detection and Control – the ability to spot and prevent threats from a distance!

  • Operational Agility – rapid response to provocations and emergency situations!

  • Solidarity – providing support not only along our coastline but also in the Mediterranean region during Frontex-coordinated missions!

European Strength in Our Security!

This project is a vivid testament to what we can achieve together with Europe. The total project cost is EUR 6.36 million, yet the majority of this weight – an impressive EUR 4.77 million – has been carried by the EU Border Management and Visa Policy Instrument (BMVI).

Thank you, Europe! Without EU solidarity and purposeful financial support, such a grand leap in security would not have been possible. These investments are more than just figures in a spreadsheet – they are tangible instruments that protect our national border, our peace, and our shared European values. Thanks to EU funds, we can feel safer today, knowing that “BĀRTA” stands guard over our maritime border.
