GENERAL PROJECT INFORMATION:

Title:
Development of the Bioeconomy Centre of Excellence at the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (WoodChemPlus)

General Objective of the Project:
To develop the scientific infrastructure at the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (LSIWC), which will promote the development of a centre of excellence in three RIS3 areas in which LSIWC is specialised in:

  • Knowledge-intensive bioeconomy

  • Photonics and smart materials, technologies and engineering systems

  • Biomedicine, medical technologies and pharmacy

This will contribute to the strategic growth and international competitiveness of the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry.

Specific Objective of the Project:
To purchase nine new, modern laboratory equipment units.

As a result of the project implementation, the scientific capacity of LSIWC will be strengthened and the existing Bioeconomy Centre of Excellence at LSIWC will be further developed.

The WoodChemPlus project is implemented within Activity 1.1.1.2 “RIS3 Research and Innovation Centres”.

PROJECT PROGRESS INFORMATION:

09 January 2026 – LSIWC is successfully continuing the implementation of Project No. 1.1.1.2/1/25/I/003.

On 9 September 2025, an agreement was concluded between LSIWC and the Central Finance and Contracting Agency (CFCA) on the implementation of the project, and on 17 October 2025, amendments to Annex 1 (LG1) were made, specifying the project implementation period.

On 16 May 2025, the first project equipment was purchased – an automatic isoperibol calorimeter.

On 10 December 2025, a contract was concluded with SIA Labochema Latvija for the procurement of a lyophilisation unit.

Currently, the evaluation of tenders received within two procurement procedures is underway for the acquisition of a single quadrupole mass spectrometer and a high-performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) with ELSD and UV-Vis DAD detectors.

Procurement procedures have been announced for:

  • “Supply of a Laminar Flow Cabinet for Laboratory Needs”

  • “Design, Manufacture and Installation of a Steam Explosion Unit within ERDF Project No. 1.1.1.2/1/25/I/003”

A market consultation has been announced for the procurement “Supply of a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) for Laboratory Needs”.

The project implementation is progressing according to plan.
