GENERAL PROJECT INFORMATION
The aim of the project is to promote the development of a multimodal public transport network with the railway as the backbone of the public transport system, developing a public transport connection point near Riga Central Station and promoting micromobility in overall mobility.
Riga Central Station is the largest railway passenger hub in Latvia and one of the most important mobility centres in Riga. Its significance will continue to grow with the implementation of Rail Baltica, which will transform the station into an international multimodal transport hub.
The station is closely connected to the city’s public transport network, the international bus station, the Origo shopping centre and the surrounding urban areas, serving significant passenger and pedestrian flows every day. However, access to the station is currently concentrated along a limited number of routes.
To improve connections between rail transport, public transport and active mobility, the project includes the redevelopment of public spaces and access infrastructure at the intersections and connections of Timoteja street, E. Benjamiņas street, Dzirnavu street and Lāčplēša street. New access corridors will be created, transfer opportunities will be improved, pedestrian and cycling accessibility will be enhanced, and multimodal travel options will be expanded.
Although these areas are already served by public transport, their potential for full integration with the railway station is not yet fully utilised. Following project implementation, they are expected to become important movement corridors for railway passengers. From a mobility perspective, the planned infrastructure will:
reduce congestion at the station’s main access points;
improve the quality of transfers through shorter travel times, enhanced safety and more intuitive navigation;
create a more balanced distribution of passenger flows and reduce conflicts between pedestrians, cyclists and motorised traffic.
Achieving the project goal and ensuring a high-quality and safe connection between Riga passenger railway station and the city's public transport hubs will promote the development of the public transport network with the railway as the backbone of the public transport system and at the same time integrate micromobility into overall mobility.
Date of completion of the project: 31.12.2029.
