GENERAL PROJECT INFORMATION

Under the supervision of the Ministry of Transport (MoT), the Greening Reform of the Riga and Pieriga Public Transport System has been implemented within the framework of the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). The objective of the reform is to reduce the negative impact of transport on environmental quality in the capital city and to develop integrated public transport services that meet residents’ needs. The measures and projects included in the reform portfolio were agreed upon by a working group comprising representatives of the MoT, the City of Riga, the Riga Planning Region, and transport sector experts.

Infrastructure improvements have been carried out along five multimodal transport corridors within the Riga metropolitan area: Riga–Carnikava–Saulkrasti, Riga–Dreiliņi, Riga–Ogre–Jēkabpils, Riga–Tukums, and Riga–Bolderāja. Investments have been made to integrate rail passenger transport into the unified public transport system of the City of Riga, including the completion of construction works in the southern part of Riga Central Railway Station and the electrification of the railway network. Funding has also been used for the construction of multifunctional stations, known as “Station 2.0”, at eight locations in Riga and Pieriga, as well as for the extension of Tram Line No. 7 in the City of Riga.

With EUR 31.29 million in funding from the Recovery and Resilience Facility, the construction, reconstruction, and modernization of eight railway stations in Riga and Pieriga has been implemented to provide residents with access to multiple services in a single location.

Within the framework of the reform, RRF investments are also allocated to the development of a unified cycling infrastructure network in Riga and Pieriga. The plan has been to develop five main cycling corridors with a total length of 52 kilometres, ensuring connectivity between urban and regional cycling routes along each corridor.

Project implementation period: 2022–2026.
