GENERAL PROJECT INFORMATION
The project envisages integrating Riga International Airport (RIX) into the Riga railway node through the existing 1520 mm railway infrastructure during Phase 1 of the Rail Baltica project implementation in Latvia for passenger transport purposes, with a future connection to the Rail Baltica main line.
The project plays a strategic role and is of significant importance in the context of dual-use and military mobility capabilities in Latvia. The development of a new railway connection is strategically important for military mobility, ensuring the operationally and technically secure integration of the airport station into the existing railway network.
The connection between Riga International Airport (RIX) and Riga Central Railway Station (RCS) is the missing link in the Northern Military Mobility Corridor. The establishment of the RIX-RCS connection will link the two sections of the corridor. RIX serves as an important military mobility hub for personnel and light equipment. The railway connection will enable the transport of critical personnel directly to required locations without relying on the road network and by using high-capacity railway rolling stock.
The project will promote sustainable public transport and deliver several key benefits:
Increased passenger transport capacity and improved accessibility for populated areas;
Reduced road traffic accidents and emissions;
Enhanced labour market mobility and regional development;
Reduced environmental footprint and lower transport infrastructure maintenance costs.
The investment will generate substantial returns in the areas of mobility, safety, climate action, and economic development.
The objective of the project is to modernise the existing electrified railway network, expand the electrified railway area, enhance passenger and train traffic safety, improve the quality and comfort of passenger services, and develop resilient defence infrastructure while promoting military mobility.
Planned Project Activities:
Construction of a 1520 mm gauge railway branch line from Riga International Airport (RIX) to the Imanta railway stop, utilizing the newly developed Rail Baltica infrastructure (viaduct and embankment) for the operation of 1520 mm gauge trains;
Modernisation of the 1520 mm railway line between Imanta and Riga Central Railway Station (RCS);
Completion of the RIX railway station building and related infrastructure (already commissioned and operational);
Modernisation of the 1520 mm railway line between RCS and Ogre;
Installation of the overhead contact line system (catenary) at RCS, integration of the signalling systems serving the Southern and Northern sections of RCS, and completion of the track infrastructure works in the Southern section of RCS.
Project completion date: 31 December 2029.
