Construction of infrastructure in the Daugavas gāte and Riga Castle forefront

Ministry of Culture

Daugavas Gāte is a historic street in Riga’s Old Town that links Riga Castle to the Daugava River, our river of destiny. With the funds of the European Regional Development Fund attracted by the Ministry of Culture, a facilitation project will be implemented here and access to the entrance of the Latvian National History Museum will be improved.

The Ministry of Culture implements a programme of European Union funds, which invests in the Old Town’s public open space and the restoration of unique heritage sites. This program is significant because it represents an investment in a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The facilitation project for Daugavas gāte will be carried out by State Real Estate, enhancing the public open space to create a more attractive living environment for Old Town residents.

Jeļena Gavrilova, member of the board of SJSC “State Real Estate”: “The primary objective of the Daugavas gāte project is to address the issue with the stormwater diversion system, as rainwater is currently seeping into the basement of Riga Castle, preventing the establishment of the necessary microclimate for the museum facilities. To resolve this, stormwater will be redirected to city streets, helping to maintain a stable microclimate in the museum’s basement and promoting sustainability.

The project also includes two enhancements that will be appreciated by passersby, residents, and visitors of Riga: a double-sided digital billboard at the gate, where information about museum life and cultural events will be displayed, creating a vital link between the museum, the public, and its visitors. We will also enhance the facade lighting to showcase the beauty of our castle not only during the day, but also in the evening.”
