After extensive construction and renovation work, several facilities were inaugurated at the Children's Hospital on May 27, significantly improving the treatment and care environment, as well as promoting the well-being of patients, their families and staff. The infrastructure improvement work was carried out thanks to funding from the European Union (EU) Recovery and Resilience Facility, or Recovery Fund (RF).
The most significant changes have taken place in two inpatient departments, where patients and their family members have been able to appreciate the improvements in individual wards for several months. The large wards on the 6th and 7th floors have been completely rebuilt, making them modern, functional and more patient and staff-friendly. Family wards with a kitchen area and a sanitary facility have also been created, ensuring greater comfort in cases of long-term treatment. In cases of high patient flow, these wards can be quickly and easily transformed so that they can accommodate several patients.
Extensive work has been carried out in the Children's Hospital Examination House, where the 1st floor has been renovated, creating modern outpatient reception rooms, improving patient flow and common areas, as well as offering a spacious lobby, a dining room with a café, separate rooms for the Courage Box project and exhibitions of patient work. As part of the development of the hospital's infrastructure, four elevators have also been replaced, large chimneys and the security service building have been renovated, and the basement has been reconstructed.
The renovation of the entrance area and facade of the Infectious Diseases Department has been completed, a connecting road with the Examination House has been built, and an outdoor rehabilitation area has been created - Kaķīša Square. The grand opening event began in the newly created Taureņu Square, which is now a modern recreation area for patients, their families and employees. Both patients and employees are actively using the outdoor exercise machines. Concerts and other events for patients and hospital visitors are planned in the stage area.
The infrastructure facilities were created and renovated within the framework of the EU Recovery Fund project No. 4.1.1.2.i.0/1/22/I/CFLA/006 “Development of the integrated healthcare system of VSIA “Children's Clinical University Hospital”. The project implementation period is from 22.11.2022 to 30.06.2026. The total project budget is 40,958,808 EUR, of which EU Recovery Fund funding – 33,860,399 EUR, 6,667,069 EUR – state budget funds.
In 2024, the construction and equipping of the new building, which houses the Children's Hospital Outpatient Health Center and Emergency Medicine Center, was completed within the framework of this funding. In turn, in 2025, the park area was improved and the reconstruction of one department in the Large Department Building was completed, the ceremonial opening of which, due to the epidemiological situation, will take place on May 27, 2026, together with several objects completed in 2026. At the same time, work will continue at the Children's Hospital on other infrastructure projects, as well as the procurement of information technology and medical equipment, until October 30, 2026.
