Accessible public transport is the foundation of an inclusive society

The UN has designated December 3 as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Two years ago, the Mobility Equality and Accessibility Advisory Council was established and it has been operating within the Ministry of Transport, whose task is to promote cooperation between institutions and companies in order to improve accessibility to public transport.

The “Norstat” survey shows that 93% of Latvian residents support accessible transport for people with mobility difficulties. Gunta Anča, Head of “SUSTENTO” and Chair of the Council, points out that the improvements already implemented in train traffic significantly help people become more mobile. However, a lot is still to be done, especially at railway stations. Some stations lack guide systems, there are no level entrances or automatic doors. Many residents are also unaware of the available mobile lift service. This shows that not only infrastructure needs to be improved, but also public awareness.
