When a young person comes into contact with the State Probation Service, they often need to learn not only how to take responsibility for their actions but also how to understand the reasons behind them and their consequences. In 2026, the State Probation Service worked with 749 children and 2,420 young people, representing 23% of all probation clients. Behind these numbers are young people with different life stories, experiences, and challenges. That is why accountability for their actions must be accompanied by opportunities to receive support and create positive change.
Difficulties with impulse control, emotional regulation, following rules, or resolving conflicts may be only part of a broader story that has gone unnoticed. After an offence has been committed, the support of professionals and people around the young person plays an important role in the resocialisation process.
Importantly, young people do not have to go through this process alone. Through cooperation with professionals, family members, schools, and other supportive individuals, young people can develop the skills needed to make more thoughtful decisions, build healthier relationships, and successfully reintegrate into society.
Society’s attitude also matters. A young person's future should not be defined by mistakes or offences committed in the past. What matters is giving them the opportunity to learn from experience, grow, receive professional support, and make positive changes in their lives.
