Shadow day 2025 - young people demonstrate great interest in transport and telecommunication sectors

Ministry of Transport

On April 4, the Ministry of Transport (MoT) welcomed a record number of job shadowers – 37 young people from schools in Riga, Daugmale, Dobele, Iecava, Jelgava, Jēkabpils, Ķekava, and Tukums. In total, more than 440 students from all over Latvia visited the MoT, its subordinate institutions, and state-owned companies to learn about professions in the transport and communications sectors.

"Working in the transport and communications sector is dynamic, interesting, and at the same time, full of responsibility and challenges. I’m pleased that every year, young people's ambition and interest in participating in the development of sectoral policy continue to grow. I am also grateful to the institutions and companies subordinated to our ministry that hosted the students and gave them the opportunity to explore various industry professions. I hope that taking part in Shadow Day will inspire young people to join the ministry’s team, contribute to the development of the sector, and strengthen the country’s competitiveness and economic growth," explained Minister of Transport Atis Švinka.

At the Ministry, alongside the opportunity to follow the daily work of the Minister of Transport, the state secretary, Deputy state secretaries, and aviation, railway, and road traffic safety experts, as well as other ministry staff, the students also got an insight into the construction process of the Rail Baltica Riga Central Station. They also tested their knowledge of road traffic regulations and safe micromobility, and learned about EU-funded projects in the transport and communications sectors.

While exploring different professions in the sector, students visited the Transport Accident and Incident Investigation Bureau, the Latvian Maritime Administration, and companies such as airBaltic, RIX Riga Airport, Latvian Air Navigation Services, Road Transport Administration, Latvian Railways, Passenger Train, European Railway Lines, Latvijas Pasts (Latvian Post), the State Radio and Television Centre of Latvia, the Road Traffic Safety Directorate, and Latvian State Roads Maintenance.
