With Interreg support, plans for regional flood response drills take shape in Jelgava

Ministry of the Interior

Representatives from Lithuanian and Latvian fire and rescue services gathered in Jelgava on July 3-4, 2025, to develop a scenario for upcoming practical exercises. These drills are set to take place in September in Lithuania, near Klaipėda. The exercises are a key activity of the cross-border cooperation project "Improving Cross-Border Cooperation of Fire and Rescue Services in Flood Response in Zemgale and Klaipėda Regions" (FloodAdapt, LL-00105). The project aims to enhance the cooperation and capabilities of both countries' services in overcoming flood-related threats.

During the meeting, participants not only reviewed the exercise concept prepared by the Lithuanian representatives but also agreed on the main tasks and resources to be involved from both sides. Representatives of the State Fire and Rescue Service also introduced their colleagues from the neighboring country to their newly acquired equipment and gear. Additionally, they visited the new Iecava Disaster Management Center.

All activities, including the planning and future execution of these exercises, are funded by the European Union's Interreg LatLit Cross-Border Cooperation Programme 2021-2027.
