With EU support, persons under international protection celebrate the summer solstice and strengthen their sense of belonging to Latvia

Ministry of the Interior

On June 19, persons under international protection gathered to welcome and celebrate the Summer Solstice!

The event brought together individuals from Latvia, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Syria, Egypt, and Yemen. Together, participants learned about Latvian solstice traditions, joined in traditional Līgo songs, and took part in folk dances. Everyone enjoyed the prepared refreshments—including traditional Jāņi cheese, bacon turnovers (pīrāgi), and the season's first strawberries—which provided plenty of energy for games and socializing.

Special thanks go to the youth of the folklore ensemble “Kokle” and the dance group “Čūskas”!

Participants shared that this was one of their best days in Latvia, as they learned so much about Latvian culture, traditions, and the country where they wish to live in safety and build their future.

The event was organized within the framework of the project “Latvia – a Country by the Baltic Sea!” with the support of the EU Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund. Grant Agreement No. AMIF/13.3./2023/1/04.
