To improve traffic safety, the regional road Inciems–Sigulda–Ķegums (P8), Raiņa and Ausekļa Streets in Sigulda, has been reconstructed (km 12.50–13.96). The road was rebuilt using solutions adapted to the urban environment, including cobblestone pavement, and new infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists was created.
“Usually Latvijas Valsts ceļi (LVC) builds roads outside populated areas, but in this case there were different solutions needed, requiring a different approach from us and adjustments from our engineers as well. In that sense, this was a certain challenge for us,” said Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Valsts ceļi Mārtiņš Lazdovskis. He also thanked all parties involved in the project for their cooperation. The project was carried out in cooperation with the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development (VARAM) and financed through the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). As part of the project, the municipality also carried out various works to make the surroundings more attractive, planning and implementing a landscaping program.
“Traffic safety is our shared priority, and this project is a proof that good results are achieved when all parties – ministries, municipalities, and project implementers – work together. I am pleased that an optimal solution has been found for more vulnerable road users, and I commend Latvijas Valsts ceļi for implementing a solution tailored to this specific urban environment,” emphasized Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Transport Ģirts Dubkēvičs.
Chairman of the Board of SIA Vianova, Sandis Zvidriņš who is also a resident of Sigulda municipality, noted that the construction project in Sigulda had turned out to be a success, though it was quite complex. “We began work last year in the Ausekļa Street section. At first, local homeowners were worried – how will this be built, what will it be like? But they understood that this project was for them! During work there were different challenges, even some amusing moments, but we managed everything on time. I want to sincerely thank my team and Latvijas Valsts ceļi for carrying out this project. Thanks also to the municipality. We need more projects like this – the town is now more beautiful, people already notice it, and they will notice it even more. In autumn, Gutman’s Cave will have a competitor, because autumn is also beautiful in the town center,” he said.
Chairman of Sigulda Municipality, Jānis Vimba, stressed that the road represents both practical convenience and a symbolic direction – a new beginning, a path, and an opportunity. “The reconstructed road, which is also a central street in Sigulda, will not only make traffic safer and more comfortable for residents and visitors, but it is also a step into the future of our municipality – toward an orderly, purposeful, and attractive environment,” he stated, expressing gratitude to the Ministry of Transport, Latvijas Valsts ceļi, the builders, and everyone involved in the project.
Construction works in Sigulda began last July, during which the roadbed was rebuilt and asphalt pavement laid.
The construction works were carried out by Ltd Vianova for a contract price of €4,717,192.93 (including VAT). This section of the regional road Inciems–Sigulda–Ķegums (P8) is included in the road repairment program developed within the framework of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development’s (VARAM) Administrative Territorial Reform, and the construction works are co-financed by the RRF. Construction supervision was provided by LTD ACM projekts, and the project designer was Ltd Projekts 3.
As part of this project, a tripartite agreement was concluded with the Sigulda Municipality, under which the municipality financed the construction of water supply and wastewater network, an electricity supply cable, as well as the planting of new trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants.
