On November 1st at 7:00 PM, Cuban cellist and singer Ana Karla Maza will perform for the first time at concert hall "Latvija" as part of the world music festival “Porta 23”, creating her own musical universe that combines jazz, classical music and the colors of Latin American sounds. The concert in Ventspils will be the artist’s first performance in Latvia.
Critics say that with her cello, 28-year-old Ana Karla Maza paints the crazy luxury of her native Havana, the accents of Brazilian samba and the tragedies of Argentine tango. It is equally breathtaking and seductive. In her compositions, you can hear both jazz and classical music, as well as Latin American rhythms. A special place in the musician’s work is occupied by Bahia – a place near Havana, where Ana spent her childhood.
Ana Karla Maza was born in Cuba into a family of musicians, so it is not surprising that she started playing the piano at the age of five, and at the age of ten she first took to the stage in Havana, playing the instrument that she still calls her own – the cello. At the age of 12, the musician moved with her family to Spain, where she began to get involved in her father Carlos’ professional music projects, also participating in two recordings.
Ana Karla Maza studied music in France, where she met cellist Vincent Segal, who also encouraged the young musician to pursue a solo career. In 2016, she released her debut album “Solo Acoustic Concert”, followed by three more studio albums, the latest of which – “Caribe” – was released this fall. Ana Karla Maza performed in many European concert halls and clubs during the tour of the new album.
The concert is organized by SIA "Kurzemes filharmonija" (Ltd.) in cooperation with the world music festival “Porta 23”, the event is financed by the European Regional Development Fund and the Ventspils City Municipality. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket sales network “Biļešu paradīze”, as well as at the box offices of the concert hall “Latvija” and the theater house “Jūras vārti”.
